NH44 climbs out of the plains, threads through the Shivalik and Pir Panjal ranges, and finally spills into the Kashmir Valley. 01 — Route Breakdown
Km 0 — City exit
Most Kashmir road trips begin at Jammu Tawi railway station or the airport. Fill fuel, stock snacks and start early — the first stretch to Udhampur is a wide four-lane highway that climbs gently into the Shivalik hills.
Travel tipLeave Jammu by 6:00 AM in summer and 7:00 AM in winter to reach Srinagar before evening traffic at Qazigund.
Km 95 — 9.2 km long
India's longest road tunnel cuts travel time by two hours and bypasses landslide-prone patches. At 1,200 m elevation, it is ventilated, well-lit and keeps the route open even when the old NH1A faces weather closures.

Km 70–150 — Pine forests & cliffs
After Chenani, the road enters a world of pine-covered ridges, deep gorges and army convoys. The Chenab River runs far below the cliff roads. This is the most dramatic but also the slowest stretch of the drive.
Travel tipGive way to military convoys and avoid overtaking on blind curves — the road here is two-lane and unforgiving.
Km 180 — 2.5 km tunnel
Banihal marks the Pir Panjal crossing. The Jawahar Tunnel (also called Banihal Tunnel) punches through the mountain at 2,200 m and is the gateway from Jammu division into the Kashmir Valley.
Travel tipCheck tunnel status before leaving Jammu — single-lane traffic or snow clearance can add 30–60 minutes.
Km 200–270 — Valley floor
Once you exit the tunnel, the landscape opens into the Kashmir Valley — apple orchards, poplar rows, saffron fields and the Jhelum River. The final 70 km to Srinagar is flat, fast and scenic.

Excellent four-lane highway. Smooth tarmac, minimal traffic outside peak Amarnath season.
Narrower, winding and prone to landslides in monsoon. Drive carefully, especially between Ramban and Banihal.
Good two-lane road through the valley. Fog in early morning and dense traffic near Srinagar city.
