Most travellers do it over 8 nights and 9 days, breaking the drive at Sonamarg, Kargil and Leh before exploring Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake. This guide covers the route, the must-see stops, the best time to go and what to expect from the road.
01 — Route Stops
Srinagar
Start with a shikara ride through the floating gardens and markets of Dal Lake, then visit the Mughal Gardens, Shankaracharya Temple and the old city around Lal Chowk.

Day trip from Srinagar
Meadows of flowers in summer, India's best skiing in winter. The Gulmarg Gondola climbs to 3,979 m with views of the Pir Panjal and Nun Kun peaks.

Srinagar–Leh highway
The 'Meadow of Gold' is the last green valley before the road climbs to Zojila Pass — the gateway to Ladakh and one of the most dramatic mountain crossings in India.

Srinagar–Leh highway
Pay respects at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, then continue through a landscape of apricot orchards, monasteries and the confluence of the Indus and Suru rivers.

Kargil–Leh highway
The moonland of Lamayuru looks like another planet — ancient monastery perched over eroded badlands. Nearby Magnetic Hill and the Indus–Zanskar Sangam are classic photo stops.
Local tipReach Lamayuru by late afternoon when the low sun turns the landscape gold.
Via Khardung La
Cross Khardung La — one of the highest motorable passes — into the Nubra Valley. Sand dunes, double-humped Bactrian camels, Diskit Monastery and the Shyok River make this a highlight.
Local tipStay in Hunder or Diskit; the sand-dune sunset and camel ride are best in the evening.
Via Agham–Shyok route
The high-altitude lake changes colour from turquoise to violet through the day. The drive from Nubra via Agham–Shyok is rough but shorter and more scenic than the Leh route.
Local tipCarry altitude-sickness medication; Pangong sits at 4,350 m and the night can be cold.
Leh
Wind down with Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, the local market and a walk past Rancho School. Leh is the cultural heart of Ladakh and the place to pick up apricots, pashmina and handicrafts.
Local tipSpend at least one full day in Leh to acclimatise before heading to higher altitudes.
02 — Best Time to Visit
The Srinagar–Leh highway is open, all passes are clear and Pangong Lake is accessible. Peak season — book hotels early.
Fewer crowds, crisp air and snow-capped peaks, but nights are freezing and some camps close.
The Srinagar–Leh road is closed; fly into Leh and plan a winter Ladakh trip instead.

8 nights / 9 days is the ideal duration — it covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Kargil, Leh, Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake with proper acclimatisation stops.
June to September is the best window. The Srinagar–Leh highway, Zojila Pass, Khardung La and Chang La are all open, and Pangong Lake is reachable by road.
Yes, with a professional driver and proper acclimatisation. The route is well-travelled, and our package includes an oxygen cylinder, inner-line permits and a centrally heated cab.
MAPAI meals, 3-star centrally heated hotels, toll taxes, permits, 1-hour shikara ride, union cab at Leh and one oxygen cylinder are included. Gondola rides, pony/ATV activities and after-duty cab charges are extra.
Indian nationals need an inner-line permit for Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Both are arranged by us as part of the package.
